30 years = 10 957.266 days

At midnight (literally- I was born at midnight), I’ll head into my 3rd decade of life!

Regrets? Nothing major, just stuff like:

- I never learned how to dive (the swimming gala trophy at my primary school was named after a girl who dived into the shallow end and cracked her skull…’nuff said!)

- I still don’t own a gun (for all the pesky Mr. Fisi’s out there)

-I’ve never voted in my life

-Losing contact with Patricia, my Std. 2 friend- we spoke the same ‘language’

-That my grandmother (maternal) died before I got to ‘interview’ her…she fascinates me

-That I didn’t let Mme. Geke ‘work on me’ and leave h. school svelte and trim (the first P.E. lesson of the year was really a torture session for my class, while the other classes strolled around the hockey pitch swapping holiday stories)…she was so fit, she could fly over hurdles like a champion…she probably still could (come to think of it)…from what I saw when I last met her! (to her credit, her French lessons served me well and earned compliments in Montreal)!

I’m happy about:

- my lungs still functioning

- my liver hasn’t packed it in

- my parents went back into the house to save me after forgetting me in my high chair during an earth tremor when I was a toddler…imagine life without me present!!!!

-my sisters and friends who’ve lived with me for the past 30 yrs…now, only another 63 or so to go (I have ambitions of seeing 93!!! I’m afraid of dying…not the idea of death, but the actual instant when I’ll be fighting for breath!! Not pretty…pills and booze I tell ya, I want to sleep into the sweet hereafter rather than fight/gargle/gasp/choke my way to the pearly gates!!!

-my hair, I have good hair…Oh, right, this isn’t about physical attributes! Sorry…

-being alive…put simply, nothing beats those unscripted moments in life e.g. today I made eye contact with a lady on the Skytrain and we shared a laugh about the guy with the crappy headphones blaring ’80s soft rock. Or the girl who shaped my eyebrows yesterday…she was genuinely nice, laid back, not yet jaded by life in this city. Or, meeting someone that I just hit it off with on Saturday…that is life…unpredictably surprising.

I dedicate my 30th birthday to the donor of half my DNA, the nurturer of my imagination, the artist and sketcher of giraffes/people for my Std. 2 homework, the sewer of swimming costumes, the brave killer-of-spiders-in-the-bathroom, the finder of bamboo for std. 8 chivotis, hides for drums, kiondos for art and cookies for form 4 exams…plainly, mummy.
